A Newer Development…

Greetings, friends. These winter months of healing from a broken shoulder have given me time to review my priorities in life. The upshot is that Vinnie and I are no longer a duo, but we’re still good friends and I feel deeply enriched by the year we played together. Vinnie’s repertoire of tunes is incredible as is his musicality. The fact that Vinnie supported me in singing for the first time shows immense bravery and compassion. ūüėČ I was blessed to play with him and get to know him and Jude. They are both gems.

Vinnie and I had fun setting up his new Facebook Music Page. He’ll be announcing his gigs via FB, so please¬†LIKE VINNIE’S PAGE HERE. In addition to his solo gigs, Vinnie will continue playing with the Blues Review Band, and the Santa Fe MegaBand that he leads.

I’m now looking for a primarily instrumental partnership, featuring extended¬†improvisational conversations between my flute and either a guitar or keyboard. Original music is great, as is popular music, some jazz, blues and vocals. Keep your ears/eyes open for me, okay?

A New Development…

Note from Hope:¬†Looks like my winter will be rich in¬†rest and¬†Netflix‚Ķ I took a fall off my mountain bike and broke my left shoulder last week. Not a bad break as they go – no surgery needed¬†– but no fluting for the near future. I’m grateful that¬†my right/dominant arm is unhurt and that this¬†didn’t happen in the summer! Friends have been lovely. Upper Crust Pizza gave me a yummy salmon salad.

I’m happy to say that Vinnie will be back at Eldorado’s Upper Crust Pizza this Friday playing guitar and singing fun Americana oldies. He’d love to see you. Bring your requests!

Happy Holidays!

Spontaneous Jam

Vinnie and I had a fun long practice, ending in this spontaneous flute/guitar jam. What a blast! This may be my favorite kind of music to play – totally FRESH. Vinnie’s more into oldies, which I also love, but I’m more into jamming. Anybody interested? I’m looking for a guitarist and/or keyboard player who likes this kind of thing.

More Pizza Jammin!

Our gigs at the Upper Crust Pizza in town and Eldorado are turning into extreme fun. We appreciate the owners’ dedication to local musicians. We love the intimate settings and the inevitable banter with friends and strangers. Vin and I had full houses at our last gigs in Eldorado & Santa Fe.¬† What fun! Thanks to everyone who showed up. Looking forward to our next neighborhood pizza gigs at Upper Crust¬†(See maps below).

We also enjoyed playing at the Santa Fe Artists Market this summer, by the 1st National Bank, at the downtown Plaza.

Farmer’s Market 6/10 & 6/20

Hope Kiah playing flute at the Farmer's market
Jonas Skardis happened by with his camera and kindly sent us this picture.

Vinnie and I played at the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market on Saturday, June 10 again on Tuesday, June 20. There’s nothing like this amazing market in Santa Fe. So worth a visit, if just for the experience. I especially love the adorable children who respond to the music, like Cedar, above. His smile was irresistible and his dancing too! In case you haven’t checked it out, the market food is amazing, as are the people. I laughed at one guy with a T-Shirt that said “Life is too short to be a vegetarian.” My body strongly agrees. The locally sourced sausage breakfast burritos sold there are awesome…

Upper Crust Gig, in Town 6/4

Last night was so sweet , playing with Vinnie on the Upper Crust Pizza portal in downtown Santa Fe. Listening to the recordings I see how our music is getting tighter, and more relaxed. Vinnie really can sing and play that guitar. The weather was gorgeous and the place filled up with friends, locals and tourists. Our next time there is Sunday July 9, again 6-9,

On Friday June 23 we’ll play at the Upper Crust Pizza in Eldorado.¬†We’d love to see you!

I’m Not Your Job

My first original: a¬†love song to my¬†¬†husband!¬†Vinnie put some nice changes behind it and he kindly accompanies my vocals. The concept was inspired by a concert where the original love song lyrics got under my skin. Same old message: If I’m unhappy, it’s your fault. If I’m happy, it’s your fault, etc. I say that¬†we are responsible for our own happiness, which is the ultimate gift we can give each other. On the way home from the concert I asked myself what¬†I would say in a love song to my husband Thom, and it hit me: “I’m Not Your Job.” So I wrote it, although it felt more like it wrote itself, and here’s the PDF.¬†(Side note: Thom¬†approves. In honor of that, see our 2015 anniversary selfie above.)

I made the song chart¬†using the online software¬†Noteflight. It’s cool! $50/year gives you many many options.

This is my quick attempt at a vocal recording:

Posting it here is one way for me to copyright the material…

Lizard Tail Open Mic

Another new open mic. (It was so fun playing with Dave Bedini last Thursday at Molly’s in Tijeras!)

Dave Wilt and Dave Bedini are the¬†hosts for Monday nights at the Lizard Tail. It’s an encouraging atmosphere for folks to try out their material, meet new people, have a beer, or jam with others.

There’s always a bass in the house, you can choose to perform alone, in small groups, or to invite someone to join you. All styles are welcome.

We’ve been carrying on every Monday for over a year, and we’re still going strong. The owners of the Lizard Tail, Ken and Dan, are good guys and music fans. They also brew all the beer, and it is really good. Wine and some sodas are also available.
